Nagorno-Karabakh Mosque Carpet
Nagorno-Karabakh is a historical Azerbaijani territory but occupied by Armenia in 1991. In the region, the art of weaving mosque carpets has been going on for centuries. However, due to the conflicts and occupation in the region, mosque carpet weaving has been interrupted. Nagorno-Karabakh carpets are woven in a style similar to other carpet types in Central Asia. Wool threads are used and often include geometric designs and figures. The colors of the carpets are generally natural colors and bright colors are not used. Most of the carpets are designed to be used as mosque carpets. However, due to the occupation, adequate support and materials are not provided for mosque carpet weaving. Therefore, mosques in the region are often without carpets or equipped with low-quality carpets. In addition, many mosques were damaged or completely destroyed due to the occupation. This situation is a source of concern for the future of Nagorno-Karabakh carpet weaving.
